Fort Frederica National Monument: The 18th-century British settlement, established by Gen. James Oglethorpe in 1736,
includes a fort that guarded Georgia’s southern frontier and a village of English and German colonists.

Christ Church, Frederica: The second-oldest Episcopal church in Georgia and the third-oldest in the country, it was
originally built in 1820, but destroyed during the Civil War. It was rebuilt in 1886. It is an active church with regular
worship services. Many of the island’s oldest and most notable residents are buried in the cemetery. A Celtic cross monument
and gardens across the street pay tribute to John and Charles Wesley, who came to Georgia in the 1740s with Oglethorpe as

St. Simon’s Lighthouse and Museum of Coastal History: The fully operational lighthouse – one of five surviving towers
in Georgia – shines 18 miles out to sea to aid navigation through St. Simon’s Sound. Visitors can climb 129 steps to the top.
The museum has exhibits on the history of the lighthouse and the life of a turn-of-the –century lighthouse keeper and his family.
The site includes an 1872 brick lighthouse and keeper’s dwelling, an 1890 oil house and a Victorian gazebo. $4; $2 ages 6-11; under 6 free.
